The security clearance of persons in Austria, referred to by the Federal Ministry of Defence (BMLV) as the "reliability check" (VLP), is carried out by the BMLV in a large numbers in order to check the reliability of BMLV personnel or persons external to the BMLV for the entrustment of sensitive tasks. For this purpose, the person providing the information voluntarily enters information about  personal data via a questionnaire to be filled out manually, the "Declaration of Reliability". The information from the declaration of reliability is currently being checked  with considerable effort, as part of a search by an examiner of the BMLV in order to reach a decision on whether to issue a positive or negative certificate.

In the course of the reliability check, data is exchanged with various authorities. During the reliability check, publicly available information can be accessed on a case-by-case basis, In view of the high number of personnel vetting processes to be carried out annually, this leads to a considerable resource burden on all authorities involved, and thus on the BMLV as a whole.
The feasibility and the implementation of methods for the digitalization and automation of the VLP are analysed in 4 technical reports. The project results will lead the way, both to reduce the burden of the examiners by increase in efficiency and to the sensible use of new methods. These results are divided into the following subject areas: The analysis of the comprehensive requirements for the VLP, in accordance with the legal mandate; Automation by switching to automated data retrieval via existing IT interfaces; Decision support through the use of intelligent software solutions based on rule-based algorithms or artificial intelligence (AI) methods; An implementation concept including the design of a system architecture.
