RUNS - Resilient, universal navigation system for “navigation warfare” use cases (RUNS)

Elaboration of the basics for the development of a domestic GNSS receiver for the Public Regulated Service (PRS) with additional innovative measures for interference mitigation.

This project aims at the elaboration of the fundamentals for a future development of an inexpensive, miniaturized, modular, military-grade technology platform, from which resilient navigation devices can be configured. The navigation devices are based on a resilient multi-frequency multi-constellation GNSS receiver with suitable measures for suppressing interference and using the Public Regulated Service (PRS). In situations where all these measures are not sufficient, the navigation system evaluates other connected sensors and combines all sensor information (sensor fusion) with the help of innovative algorithms.

The definition of such a navigation device platform suitable for military applications must cover the specific needs of different troop bodies, taking into account the applicable restrictions in terms of size, weight and power consumption, as well as environmental conditions. Methods for GNSS receivers hardening include the introduction of redundancy through multi-constellation and multi-frequency capabilities, modern methods for interference detection and suppression (anti-jamming), the detection and alleviation of intelligent attempts of manipulation (anti-spoofing) as well as encryption and authentication via PRS. In this context, the applicability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms will also be investigated.

At the end of the project, a complete, justified and documented device concept will be available, based on the outcomes of the following subtasks:

  • Identification, analysis and consideration of possible threat scenarios
  • Identification and analysis of military-user requirements
  • Establishment of a requirement specification
  • Investigation and development of GNSS denial countermeasures
  • Architecture design, rationalization and system analysis
  • Experimental investigation and validation of critical elements, especially the PRS and multi-sensor capable GNSS receiver module
